Eight persons have been arrested in connection with the violent incidents that erupted during the Ablekuma North constituency rerun on Friday July 11, 2025.

This was confirmed by the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, during a meeting with the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.

According to the IGP, the suspects, apprehended by the Accra Regional Police Command, are currently being processed and are expected to be arraigned in court either on Thursday, August 21, or Friday, August 22.

“Eight suspects have been arrested as of yesterday. They are being processed, and from the advice I have from the regional commander, by tomorrow or Friday all these suspects will be sent to court,” he stated.

The rerun was necessitated by unresolved voter verification issues during the December 2024 general elections, was marred by violent confrontations.

Reports and video footage showed journalists, political party representatives, and others being assaulted by suspected political thugs, prompting widespread condemnation from the public, media, and civil society.

The IGP emphasized that the Ghana Police Service remains committed to ensuring justice for all those affected and holding accountable anyone who failed to perform their duties professionally during the disturbances.

Dr. Yohuno reiterated the police administration’s zero-tolerance stance on violence and misconduct, underscoring that the integrity of elections and public trust hinges on the professionalism of law enforcement officers.

The Ghana Police Service, along with other security agencies, has vowed to continue pursuing all perpetrators of violence and to ensure that electoral processes are protected from intimidation and disorder.
