The Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on May 21, 2024, launched the Kayayei Empowerment programme and commissioned two Kayayei Hostels and Training Centres in Ashiaman and Madina. This was to fulfil a campaign promise made to kayayeis in the country and part of efforts to eradicate extreme poverty in Ghana.
“This noble endeavour resonates profoundly with the core values of our political mission, as it squarely addresses the pressing needs of a marginalized segment of our society that has long been relegated to the shadows of neglect and indifference”, he stated.
The programme was in collaboration with various government agencies, including the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA), National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), among others.

Elaborating on the focus of the programme, Dr. Bawumia indicated that the 5000 rigorously selected head porters will be immersed in a transformative learning experience. This will encompass essential modules such as baking and beading, supplemented by invaluable soft skills training in personal health care, financial management, and entrepreneurial acumen for a duration of three (3) weeks. Subsequently, participants will access post-training support, receiving starter packs tailored to facilitate their seamless integration into new economic opportunities.
The flagbearer intimated that there have been advancements in engagements with Metro Mass, Ayalolo, and the Accra Digital Centre to train participants in driving and ICT, expanding the programme’s scope. He added that the developed curriculum aligns with industry standards to ensure that the programme produces industry-ready individuals.
“As we embark on this transformative journey, let us collectively pledge our unwavering commitment and solidarity to ensure the resounding success of the Kayayie Empowerment Programme,” he emphasized, clamouring for support from the general public.
He also reiterated his continued support for all marginalized groups in the country and expressed his willingness to implement bold solutions for Ghana’s economic transformation.
