Ablekuma North Rerun: Let’s work to fix ‘broken’ EC – Omane Boamah tells NPP

Defence Minister and NDC Elections Director, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has urged the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to work together restore credibility to Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC), amid deepening controversy over a pending parliamentary election rerun in Ablekuma North.

His call comes in the wake of a fierce standoff between the EC and the NPP, following the Commission’s announcement that fresh polls will be conducted in 19 polling stations in the constituency on Friday, July 11, 2025.

The rerun, according to the EC, is necessary due to verification irregularities in those stations after the December 2024 parliamentary election.

The NPP, however, has rejected the decision, accusing the EC of acting arbitrarily and defying earlier court rulings.

Party General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua said at a press briefing on July 3 that the EC had previously acknowledged that only three polling stations had unresolved results—raising questions about the sudden expansion to 19.

The EC, defending its position, stated that while 18 of the 37 disputed polling stations had their results verified by officials and agents, the remaining 19 did not meet the necessary requirements. The Commission said it is working with the Ghana Police Service to ensure a peaceful and transparent rerun.

The unresolved dispute has left Ablekuma North without a Member of Parliament for over seven months, highlighting the ongoing mistrust between major political parties and the country’s electoral body.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, July 9, Dr. Omane Boamah said the NPP is now grappling with consequences it could have avoided had it paid attention to the NDC’s earlier concerns about the EC’s readiness and neutrality.

He described the EC as ‘broke’, calling on the NPP to collaborate to fix it.
