President John Dramani Mahama is leading discussions on an “Inner City Big Push” initiative aimed at transforming infrastructure in neighbourhoods across Ghana’s major cities, Local Government Minister Mahama Ayariga has disclosed.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House on Monday, October 5, Mr Ayariga said the initiative would focus on improving roads, drains, walkways, street lighting and green spaces in inner-city communities.
He said the President was working with the Ministries of Local Government, Roads and Highways and Finance to develop a financing model that would rely largely on a reconfigured property rate regime and betterment charges, with government support.
“The objective is to ensure every neighbourhood in our cities has paved streets, walkways, adequate drainage, street lighting and enough greenery,” Mr Ayariga said.
He added that the initiative was expected to increase property values in communities where infrastructure improvements were undertaken and urged property owners to cooperate when implementation begins.
