The Accra High Court has granted Manhyia South MP Nana Adjei Baffour Awuah GH¢10 million bail with two sureties following his surrender to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after the agency’s repeated invitations for questioning.
Baffour Awuah voluntarily reported to EOCO on October 1, 2026, accompanied by his lawyers, after the anti-graft agency had made several attempts to secure his attendance.
The development followed an earlier attempt by EOCO to arrest the legislator at the Accra High Court on September 23, 2026, after he appeared in court. A warrant was subsequently issued for his arrest on September 30.
EOCO is investigating matters linked to a disputed settlement involving SIC Life Savings and Loans and Equity Savings and Loans.
The investigation also resulted in searches at the MP’s residence and office under warrants issued by the High Court.
The court, however, determined that Baffour Awuah was not a flight risk and granted him bail, while directing him to remain available to investigators.
He is expected to reappear before the court on October 26 and November 2, 2026, at 10 a.m.
During the bail hearing, defence lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea argued that the MP’s voluntary appearance and cooperation with EOCO demonstrated his willingness to submit to the investigative process.
Mr. Atta Akyea told the court that his client spent about eight hours at EOCO on October 1 and was subsequently subjected to further questioning.
He also challenged allegations concerning GH¢9.85 million, explaining that Baffour Awuah’s former law firm had been engaged to recover funds owed to SIC Savings and Loans by Equity Savings and Loans.
The matter, he said, became subject to prolonged litigation before the parties eventually entered into settlement negotiations.
The Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, opposed the request for self-recognisance bail.
He argued that the court should impose conditions to ensure the MP remains available for the investigation, pointing to earlier efforts by EOCO to secure his attendance.
The court ultimately granted the GH¢10 million bail with two sureties and ordered Baffour Awuah to make himself available to investigators as the probe continues.
Baffour Awuah’s case stems from an EOCO investigation into circumstances surrounding a financial settlement involving SIC Life Savings and Loans.
The investigation intensified in September after the agency’s attempts to secure his attendance and an alleged attempt to arrest him at the Accra High Court.
His voluntary appearance before EOCO on October 1 came shortly after the High Court issued an arrest warrant on September 30.
