New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Youth Organiser aspirant Michael Osei Boateng, popularly known as “Pope,” has withdrawn from the race and endorsed fellow candidate Fuseini Yakubu Abanga.
The development comes as the NPP’s national officers election is ongoing at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, where delegates are voting to elect the party’s new national executives.
According to party sources, Pope stepped down from the National Youth Organiser contest just hours before delegates began voting.
His withdrawal leaves Abanga with the backing of a former contender as the contest enters a crucial stage.
Pope was among six candidates cleared to contest the National Youth Organiser position. The other candidates are Fuseini Yakubu Abanga, Clement Opoku Gyamfi, Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah, Vera Oye Bram-Larbi and Kumi Alfred Ababio.
Abanga, who previously contested the National Youth Organiser position in 2022, is considered one of the prominent contenders in the current race.
The latest development could influence the dynamics of the youth organiser election as delegates continue to cast their ballots at the ongoing national conference.
The NPP is electing nine national officers at the conference, with 7,163 delegates expected to participate in the exercise.
