A loading boy at Ayi Mensah in the Greater Accra Region, Jonathan Quaicoe, has been commended by the Ghana Police Service for returning a bag containing €3,000 and GH¢1,000 that was left behind in a commercial vehicle travelling from Accra to Koforidua.
Quaicoe handed the bag and its contents to the police after finding it at Ayi Mensah, helping investigators trace the property to its owner.
The incident followed a journey by a woman who boarded a commercial Toyota Hiace at Ghana Flag for Koforidua with the bag containing the money.
After arriving in Koforidua, she realised that the bag was missing and reported the matter to the Koforidua Central Police Station.
The report prompted the New Juaben South Police Command to begin investigations into the circumstances surrounding the missing property.
As part of the investigation, a team was deployed to Accra to trace the vehicle and establish what had happened to the bag.
Police enquiries eventually led investigators to Quaicoe at Ayi Mensah, where the bag had been found.
Instead of keeping the money, Quaicoe surrendered it to the police, making it possible for the rightful owner to recover her property.
The New Juaben South Police Command subsequently recognised Quaicoe for his honesty and commended him for setting an example for the public.
At a ceremony held in his honour, the New Juaben South Municipal Crime Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Augustine Asante Kusi, urged members of the public who find lost money or valuables to hand them over to the police.
He said acts of honesty and integrity were important to strengthening public trust and promoting a safer society.
As part of the recognition, the police presented Quaicoe with a brand-new mobile phone, while the owner of the recovered money also reportedly rewarded him for returning her property.
ASP Asante Kusi further appealed to the public to resist the temptation to keep lost property and instead assist the police in tracing its rightful owners.
