The Volta North Regional Police Command has secured the conviction of a 31-year-old woman, Stella Amedzorme, for abducting an eight-month-old baby at the Kpando Market in the Volta Region.
Amedzorme was sentenced to three years in prison by the Kpando Circuit Court after pleading guilty to the offence.
The case was reported to the police on July 17, 2026, after the baby’s mother, 21-year-old Gloria Xagbe, said she had briefly left her son in the care of Amedzorme, a fellow market trader, while she went to purchase packaging bags.
When she returned, both Amedzorme and the child were nowhere to be found.
Following intelligence-led investigations, the police arrested Amedzorme on July 18 at Toviate, a suburb of Kwamekrom in the Oti Region, and rescued the baby unharmed.
During investigations, the convict reportedly admitted taking the child on the instructions of her fiancé, who is currently at large.
Amedzorme was first arraigned before the Kpando Circuit Court on July 20 and remanded in police custody.
She returned to court on August 3, pleaded guilty to the charge and was subsequently sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.
The police said efforts are ongoing to arrest her alleged accomplice to assist with investigations and bring him before the court.
The Volta North Regional Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable persons and urged parents and guardians to exercise caution when entrusting their children to other people.
The Command also encouraged the public to provide relevant information to assist the police in preventing child-related crimes and bringing offenders to justice.
