Koforidua Technical University (KTU) in the Eastern Region has confirmed the arrest of ten individuals by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) over allegations of producing and selling cannabis-infused drinks and ice cream during the university’s Students’ Representative Council (SRC) Week celebrations.
In a statement issued by the university’s management, it clarified that the arrests occurred on Saturday, August 1, 2026, during SRC Week celebrations and not Hall Week celebrations as earlier reported.
According to KTU, seven out of the ten persons arrested are students of the university, while the remaining three are not affiliated with the institution.
Management disclosed that it has visited the affected students at the NACOC headquarters in Accra, where they are currently assisting with investigations.
The university condemned the alleged production and sale of cannabis-infused products, describing the act as unacceptable and contrary to its regulations.
It cited Article 15 (vi) of the Students’ Handbook, which prohibits students from engaging in such misconduct.
KTU said parents of the affected students have been contacted and informed about the development, adding that some have since identified their wards who are alleged to have been involved.
The university urged parents, students and the general public to remain calm, assuring them that it is cooperating fully with the relevant authorities to establish the facts surrounding the matter.
Management also reminded the public that, in accordance with Article 19 (2) (c) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, the affected students are presumed innocent until proven or they plead guilty before a competent court of law.
The university said further action would be announced after investigations are concluded.
Meanwhile, as a precautionary measure, KTU has suspended all SRC activities until further notice and constituted a committee to investigate the incident and recommend measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
