The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 12-year-old boy and a 34-year-old man following the circulation of a viral video showing the minor behind the wheel of a heavy-duty articulated truck.
The arrests were made after the widely shared video sparked public concern over road safety and the apparent involvement of a child in operating a commercial vehicle.
In a statement, the Police identified the vehicle as a DAF XF 105 articulated truck with registration number GS 3097-20.
“The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 12-year-old boy and a 34-year-old man suspected driver of a DAF XF 105 articulated truck with registration number GS 3097-20, in connection with a viral video showing the minor driving the heavy-duty truck.”
According to the Police, both suspects are currently assisting with investigations.
The Service used the opportunity to caution parents, guardians and vehicle owners against allowing children or unlicensed persons to operate vehicles, particularly heavy-duty trucks.
“The Ghana Police Service reminds parents, guardians, and vehicle owners not to permit minors or unlicensed persons to operate motor vehicles, particularly heavy-duty trucks, as such acts endanger lives and violate the Road Traffic Act.”
The Police also appealed to the public to support efforts to improve road safety by reporting similar incidents.
The arrests follow widespread outrage after a video circulated on social media showing a young boy driving what appeared to be a loaded articulated truck on a public road while an adult accompanied him.
The footage prompted calls for swift action from road safety advocates and members of the public, who warned that allowing an unlicensed minor to operate a heavy-duty vehicle posed a serious risk to the child and other road users.
