Ninety communities across the nine districts of the Oti Region are set to benefit from a major electricity expansion project under the Rural Electricity Acceleration and Urban Intensification Initiative (REIP).

The Turnkey Electrification Project was launched at the Dambai College of Education on Thursday, September 25, 2026, with the government committing GH¢300 million to the Oti Region under the initiative.

Deputy Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Richard Gyan-Mensah, who represented the sector Minister, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, at the launch, said the project would help extend electricity access to communities that remain unconnected to the national grid.

The project, being implemented by Le Grino Limited, is expected to be completed within six months.

The REIP forms part of the government’s flagship “Big Push” agenda, which seeks to connect unelectrified communities to the national grid while upgrading urban electricity infrastructure within four years.

The launch was chaired by the Oti Regional Minister, John Kwadwo Gyapong, and attended by traditional and religious leaders, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, Assembly Members, officials from the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), management of Le Grino Limitrd and other stakeholders.

The Paramount Chief of the Chonke Traditional Area, Daasebre Atamafowiese Kwame Bonja II, led traditional leaders at the ceremony.

Mr Gyan-Mensah said the project formed part of broader government investments to improve electricity access and reliability across the country.

He said the Oti Region would also benefit from ongoing investments in grid extensions, mini-grids, solar home systems, all-in-one solar systems and grid-connected streetlighting infrastructure.

Beyond expanding access, he said the government was investing in transmission and distribution infrastructure to improve power reliability and quality.

More than 2,000 distribution transformers are being deployed nationwide across the operational areas of ECG and NEDCo, while work is also being undertaken to strengthen the Eastern Corridor transmission system.

Mr Gyan-Mensah stressed the importance of electricity to education, healthcare, businesses, agro-processing, job creation and improved livelihoods.

He urged beneficiary communities and other stakeholders to support the implementation of the project and help protect the infrastructure once completed.

The Deputy Minister said the investments were part of efforts to advance Ghana’s goal of achieving universal access to electricity while improving the reliability of power supply.
