ECG disconnects Ghana Water Company over GHS1 billion debt

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has disconnected the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) from the national grid over an outstanding electricity debt totalling GHS1 billion.

The disconnection occurred on Tuesday, June 16, 2025, as part of ECG’s nationwide debt recovery campaign targeting major defaulters.

According to officials, GWCL is among several state and private institutions cited for accumulating huge debts through unpaid bills, illegal connections, and technical irregularities

This underscores the broader challenges facing Ghana’s utility sector, where mounting debts threaten the sustainability of essential services like electricity and water.

In a video shared by JoyNews on X (formerly Twitter), members of the ECG disconnection team were heard expressing frustration at the situation.

The incident comes amid growing pressure on ECG to retrieve massive arrears owed by institutions to stabilize Ghana’s energy sector.

Energy and Green Transition Minister, John Jinapor, had previously flagged GWCL’s failure to pay its electricity bills for over seven months.

Speaking at a Parliamentary Select Committee on Energy meeting on May 15, the Minister stressed the urgent need for ECG to recover its funds to maintain operations.

He added that relying solely on taxpayer funding was unsustainable and insisted that institutions benefitting from power must fulfill their financial obligations.
