A combined team from the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) and the Nzema East Blue Water Guards has dismantled a sprawling illegal mining settlement at Gwira Abrodeam in the Nzema East Municipality.

The raid, carried out on Thursday, September 11, 2025, targeted a makeshift community of more than 2,000 illegal miners and their families.
Over 99 wooden and metal structures were pulled down in the operation.

Task force officials destroyed 54 changfan machines used for river dredging and seized items including motorbikes, pumping machines, fuel containers, a solar panel, and household equipment believed to support mining activities.

Three excavators, earlier immobilized in previous exercises, were also permanently disabled to prevent their return to use.

Authorities say the move forms part of an intensified crackdown aimed at restoring Ghana’s rivers, particularly the Ankobra, Birim, Pra, and Bonsa, which continue to suffer severe pollution from galamsey operations.
