Government Seeks $150M Loan, Plans $334M Tax Waivers for Private Firms – Dafeamekpor Raises Concerns

Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor , member of parliament from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), representing South Dayi, has voiced sharp criticism against the government’s recent actions in Parliament. Specifically, he’s raising concerns over what he sees as contradictory moves by the government.

On one hand, the government is seeking Parliament’s approval for a $150 million loan from the International Development Association (IDA). However, simultaneously, it’s requesting Parliament to waive taxes amounting to over $334 million for 42 private companies.

Dafeamekpor highlighted the staggering figures on his former Twitter account, expressing dismay at what he perceives as governmental insensitivity and misplaced priorities. He emphasized that while the government is seeking financial assistance through loans, it’s also granting significant tax waivers to private entities, with one company alone, Santuo Oil Refinery, slated to receive tax waivers worth $164.6 million.

Dafeamekpor’s critique underscores concerns about fiscal responsibility, equity, and the government’s allocation of resources. His statement suggests a broader debate about the balance between stimulating private sector growth and ensuring that public funds are used judiciously and in the best interest of the nation.”
