The government plans to assign selected streets in major cities to private companies to support their reconstruction, redevelopment and maintenance, Local Government Minister Mahama Ayariga has announced.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House on Monday, October 5, Mr Ayariga said banks, manufacturing companies, construction firms, logistics companies and insurance companies would be among businesses being considered for the initiative.
He said participating companies could receive advertising rights along the streets, while some roads could potentially be renamed or have their names shared with existing personalities as part of the arrangement.
“Under the direction of President Mahama we have commenced an exercise to assign all streets in our major capital cities to private businesses,” he said.
Mr Ayariga said the first report on the initiative was expected from the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority and the National Urban Roads Directorate, after which the participation framework would be submitted to President Mahama for approval. He said the broader ambition was to improve the appearance and functionality of Ghanaian cities.
