Political strategist of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Razak Kojo Opoku, has questioned the suitability of the party’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, for the position of First National Vice Chairman.
Dr Opoku argues that the First Vice Chairman must be capable of acting in the absence of the National Chairman and, in that capacity, providing leadership for the party.
“Nana B is honestly NOT ripe for the position of 1st National Vice-Chairperson because he CANNOT competently ACT as the Leader & National Chairman of the NPP in the absence of the elected National Chairman,” he said.
He suggested that delegates could instead consider Nana Boakye for the position of Third National Vice Chairman.
Dr Opoku also criticised another aspirant, Chairman Bugri Naabu, saying: “As for Chairman Buga, he needs to go home and rest.”
He subsequently threw his support behind former Communications Director and former Managing Director of the State Transport Company (STC), Nana Akomea, for the First Vice Chairmanship position, while backing former Information Minister Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid for the Second Vice Chairmanship.
“Nana Akomea is the Best option for 1st National Vice-Chairperson supported by Mustapha Abdul-Hamid as the 2nd National Vice-Chairperson,” Dr Opoku stated.
The NPP’s 2026 Vice-Chairperson contest has attracted 13 candidates.
The party’s rules provide for three of the successful candidates to be designated First, Second and Third Vice-Chairpersons.
Henry Nana Boakye, Mustapha Abdul-Hamid and Nana Akomea are among the contenders in the race, with the national executive elections scheduled for October 3, 2026, in Kumasi.
Dr Opoku’s comments come amid competing assessments of the vice-chairmanship race.
A recent survey placed Nana Boakye ahead among NPP delegates, while Mustapha Abdul-Hamid and Nana Akomea followed with lower shares of stated preference.
