The spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu, has urged Ghanaians to reflect on the purpose of life and the certainty of death as the nation marked the first anniversary of the military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight senior government officials and security personnel.

Delivering a sermon during the memorial service, Sheikh Shaibu said the tragic deaths were part of God’s divine will, stressing that no one chooses the circumstances of their death.

“Our gallant heroes did not choose to die the way they did. Nor did they even consult their family members in order to get their approval of the circumstance of their death. But a powerful will of God that unfolds caused that.”

He reminded mourners that death is inevitable and comes only at a time determined by God.

“Death remains the common plight of every human being… The destiny, undeniable, irresistible, to be experienced by every one of us.”

Quoting from the Holy Quran, he said no soul dies except by the permission of God.
“It shall never happen that any soul will die except by the leave of God. It is an occurrence precisely determined by God.”

Sheikh Shaibu explained that earthly life is temporary and should be viewed as preparation for eternal life.

“Life on this earth is transitory… Meaning that, death is not coterminous with life, because after death, life continues.”

He urged Ghanaians to live purposeful lives, saying every individual has been created to fulfil a divine mission.

“God has a purpose for our creation… we lead a life such that we encounter the destiny as God has made it for us, but also to fulfill a purpose and to accomplish a mission.”

According to him, human beings will ultimately account to God for how they lived their lives.

“The Lord who granted us this life for a purpose wants to examine us how we lived this life. And that is where the accountability comes in.”

The memorial service was held to honour the eight victims of the military helicopter crash, whose deaths shocked the nation exactly one year ago.
