Angela List demands retraction, threatens defamation suit against The New Republic

Businesswoman Angela List has demanded an immediate retraction and front-page apology from The New Republic newspaper over what her lawyers describe as a defamatory publication linking her to illegal mining activities.

In a letter dated August 4, 2026, lawyers for Ms. List, Apatu-Plange & Co. PRUC, accused the newspaper of publishing “false, malicious and defamatory” allegations in a front-page story that described her as the “Galamsey Queen of Nzema.”

According to the solicitors, the publication also carried the headline: “How Angela List used State power to seize an Australian Mine and turn it into a ‘Galamsey Empire’,” which they argue is entirely false and has caused significant reputational damage to their client.

The lawyers contend that the story contains numerous factual inaccuracies and misrepresentations deliberately crafted to associate Ms. List with illegal mining, one of Ghana’s most serious criminal and environmental challenges.

They further accused the newspaper of abandoning the principles of responsible journalism by using press freedom to inflict unwarranted harm on their client’s reputation.

“Our Client emphatically denies the allegations published by you and rejects as entirely false and malicious every defamatory imputation arising therefrom,” the letter stated.

According to the legal representatives, Ms. List has built a strong reputation both in Ghana and internationally, and the publication has exposed her to public ridicule, hatred and contempt.

The lawyers have therefore demanded that The New Republic publish a full and unconditional apology and retraction on its front page with equal or greater prominence than the original publication within seven days of receiving the letter.

They stressed that nothing short of a front-page apology would be acceptable.

The legal team also warned that should the newspaper fail to comply with the demand, Ms. List is prepared to commence legal proceedings to protect her reputation.

The letter cautioned that any consequences arising from the newspaper’s refusal to take corrective action would be “entirely of your own making.”
