UTNMG demands probe into arrest of Techiman Krobo nursing students during protest

The Union of Trainee Nurses and Midwives, Ghana (UTNMG) has condemned the arrest and alleged maltreatment of students of the Techiman Krobo Nursing and Midwifery Training College, calling for an immediate investigation into the incident.

This follows a protest by students of the college over welfare and academic concerns, which led to the arrest of some students following a confrontation with police. The students have since been released.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, the union described the alleged intimidation and use of force against the students as inappropriate, despite the responsibility of authorities to maintain law and order.

According to UTNMG, students have a constitutional right to peacefully express their concerns, stressing that grievances should be addressed through engagement rather than intimidation.

The union said it was particularly disturbed that trainee nurses and midwives, who are being trained to uphold compassion and advocacy, were allegedly subjected to treatment inconsistent with those values.

Although the arrested students have since been released, UTNMG said the incident raises serious questions that must be addressed.

It has therefore urged the Ministry of Health to launch an impartial investigation into the circumstances that led to the protest and engage all relevant stakeholders to restore confidence, safeguard students’ welfare and achieve a lasting resolution.

The union also appealed to the Union of Professional Nurses and Midwives, Ghana (UPNMG) to engage the Ministry of Health, the college’s management and student representatives to facilitate dialogue.

Reaffirming its support for the affected students, UTNMG stated, “We stand in solidarity with you,” while urging them to “remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding while pursuing dialogue and lawful means of resolving their grievances.”

The union further reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the interests of trainee nurses and midwives, saying it would continue to advocate for “safe, respectful and conducive learning environments in all nursing and midwifery training institutions.”
