The Greater Accra branch of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been hit by a scandal involving fake fundraising tickets, causing tension within the party just weeks before a major fundraising event. The tickets, which are being circulated ahead of a scheduled fundraising dinner on September 22, 2024, at the Marriott International Hotel in Accra, have been deemed fraudulent by regional party executives.
In a strongly worded statement issued by the Greater Accra NDC Regional Secretary, Theophilus Tetteh Chaie, the party distanced itself from the unauthorized tickets and warned the public to be cautious. The statement read:
“Our notice has been drawn to a card inviting prospective supporters and sympathizers to a dinner in aid of a fundraising event at Marriott International Hotel Accra on 22nd September 2024. I wish to state categorically clear that the Fundraising Committee has not come out with any invitation cards, and therefore any invitation under circulation is fraudulent and should be disregarded.”
Theophilus Tetteh Chaie further emphasized that the regional executives and the fundraising committee had not approved any tickets or invitations for the event, making the circulating tickets a deliberate attempt to deceive NDC supporters. The fraudulent scheme has caused significant frustration among regional executives, who are scrambling to maintain order and prevent further harm to the party’s image.
Unconfirmed reports have surfaced, suggesting that the fake tickets may have been issued under the direction of a prominent regional chairman and a sitting NDC Member of Parliament from an Eastern Corridor constituency. These allegations have further inflamed tensions within the party, leading to anger and mistrust among the regional executives.
Party insiders reveal that the executives are deeply concerned about the potential fallout from this fraudulent activity, especially as the party is preparing for several critical events in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections. The situation threatens to undermine confidence in the NDC’s internal processes and disrupt legitimate fundraising efforts that are vital for campaign activities.
